Where in America Do People Have the Most Bridesmaids?

If you have 10 bridesmaids, is that a lot?

Well, according to our data at Weddington Way, having 10 bridesmaids puts you in the 98th percentile for bridal party size in the United States. Put differently, just 2% of weddings in America have bridal parties with 10 or more bridesmaids. If you consider that there is typically one groomsman for every bridesmaid, 10 bridesmaids can mean you’re up to at least 20 people in the wedding party overall!

So yes, statistically speaking, 10 bridesmaids is a lot. But it’s not the most we’ve ever seen! We’ve worked with bridal parties with as many as 19 bridesmaids.

At Weddington Way, we’re in the business of selling bridesmaids dresses. So, we’re very happy when we get to accommodate such a big group. In order to provide the best service, we rely on data gathered from the site, including data about bridal party size: how big the average bridal party is, and, across the country, where bridal parties tend to be larger.

There are some interesting insights to be found in this data. You might find the answers to some burning questions, like: What city has the highest number of bridesmaids on average? We’re looking at you, Charleston. What state takes the top spot for most people in a bridal party? Hello Louisiana.

In fact, looking at our bridal party data, most of the top spots in our rankings were taken by places in the South: when it comes to bridal parties, bigger is always better!

How Does Your Bridal Party Compare?

For weddings across America, the average number of bridesmaids is 4.39. So if you have 4 bridesmaids, that puts you below the national average. If you have 5 bridesmaids, you are above average. The median size of a bridal party is 4 bridesmaids. We should point out that our dataset only includes bridal parties, which is defined as at least 2 bridesmaids (you can’t have a party with just one person!).
Once your bridal party is 7 or more bridesmaids, your group is getting uncommonly large! Once you get to 10 more more bridesmaids, you are in the rarefied air of the top 2%.

Note: Bridal party defined as two or more bridesmaids

If you want to make it into the top 1% of bridal parties in America, you need 11 bridesmaids. And if you have a bridal party of 15 or more, that puts you in the top 0.07% of all wedding parties. These may seem like very large wedding parties to you, but they happen on our site fairly regularly.

Charleston: The Bridesmaid Capital of the United States

Next, we break the data down into a city-level analysis. In which cities do brides tend to put together larger wedding parties? We look at the city that the bride lives in and calculate the average number bridesmaids in her wedding party.

Charleston takes the top spot, followed by Birmingham and New Orleans:

Southern cities sweep the top 4 positions when it comes to having the most bridesmaids and make up 7 of the top 10 positions.

Next, let’s look at which cities tend to have the highest proportion of “mega-sized” bridal parties with 7 or more bridesmaids.

In cities like Birmingham, New Orleans, Charleston, and Waco, there is roughly a 25% chance any given wedding you attend will have 7 or more bridesmaids!

Finally, let’s rank all the states to see where the bridal parties tend to be the largest. Again, the South sweeps the top 3 spots. Compared to the rest of the country, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Alabama are a league apart when it comes to the number of bridesmaids in a wedding party.
Bringing up the rear of the rankings is New Mexico. On average, a wedding party where the bride is from Louisiana will be 26% bigger than one in New Mexico!

There is of course no “normal” number of bridesmaids for a wedding. The US average is around four and a half. If you live in the South, that number might be a bit higher! And if you live in Charleston, South Carolina, there is a good chance you’re going to have a really big wedding party.
